Liotro have for many years made one of the finest value wines in Sicily. Their Nero D’Avola can usually be found for $10.00 and trust me, it’s a phenomenal amount of wine for just a little more than 2 gallons of gas – stay home tonight, save on the gas and have a bottle of that. If you can then find the Liotro Nero D’Avola “Baglio di Gio” stay home for 2 days and drink this instead. It’s the reserve version and it’s worth every penny at $20.00. This is the pure essence of Sicily and Etna in a bottle. It pours almost opal black and you breathe in notes of wood ash, bramble and a heady mix of truffle and wild mushroom. Even before you drink it you sense that you are eating the best bowl of spaghetti y funghi you have ever had. I loved the texture of the wine too – there’s a roughness to it that makes the wine more than just a two dimensional pour – it’s like drinking a red wine with a mouthful of blackcurrants and dried raisins. This is a big, earthy, structured wine that begs for some food and maybe even a little decanting beforehand. I’m not crazy about the label, I like the elephants but this is a classy wine that should be better dressed!
