“Three” Old Vines Field Blend

03 Mar

Matt Cline is the brains behind this new vineyard. He hails from the Cline Family of Oakley, California – always a great source of inexpensive wines for early quaffing. His brother started the winery (their grandmother is Valeriano Jacuzzi of hot tubs and midnight parties fame – seriously), at Cline Cellars but at some point early this century Matt went off on his own, started Trinitas Vineyards, sold it and I guess with all that money started Three Wine Company.

Whatever…we got to taste the wine last week and I felt that it probably needed a little food to go with it so I squirrelled away a bottle and took it home to drink with dinner. It didn’t need food. It’s really quite lovely – a wonderful blend of grapes you don’t often find – 27% carginan, 19% petite Sirah, 17% Mataro, 2% Alicante Bouschet, 1% Malvoisie and the balance coming from zinfandel. It’s definitely a female zin -soft, very luscious but structured fruit throughout. There’s none of that hot flush, Welch’s grape crap. It’s very pure, very clean and very well put together. As I said, it didn’t need the food, even though it breaks out at 15.3% alcohol; the food certainly helped bring out the flavors of the wine but in truth the wine has so much going on inside without the necessity of stuffing more ripe fruit and sweeteners in it. It has an almost Mediterranean flavor to it – some black olive, rich olive oil, touch of roasted Balsamic, and I suspect that with a slight chill on it this could be very happy alongside a summer BBQ.

Really interesting wine, really deep flavors and a really good price. Three reasons to buy “Three”.

2009 Our Old Vines Field Blend is sourced from ancient vineyards in Contra Costa County and is a blend of 34% Zinfandel, 27% Carignane, 19% Petite Sirah, 17% Mataro, 2% Alicante Bouschet, and 1% Black Malvoisie. All the grapes in this blend come from vineyard blocks with extremely sandy soils called Delhi Sandy Loam. Our Field Blend is a full-bodied, dark fruit driven wine that should evolve gracefully for many years to come.
